How the calculator works

For each person, it adds up what they paid and subtracts their share of every expense they took part in. A positive total means the group owes them money; a negative total means they owe the group. All the totals add up to zero.

It then looks for the smallest number of payments that brings everyone to zero. Instead of everyone paying back everyone they owe, debts are combined. With six friends, that often turns up to fifteen payments into three or four.

An example

Anna pays €300 for the hotel, Ben pays €90 for dinner, and Chris pays €24 for a taxi he shared with Anna. Anna's share is €142 but she paid €300, so she's owed €158. Ben owes €40 and Chris owes €118. Two payments settle it: Chris pays Anna €118 and Ben pays Anna €40.

Questions

Do I need to sign up?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere. The "Copy link" button puts the whole calculation in the link itself, so you can send it to your friends.

Can I split an expense between only some of the group?

Yes. Untick the people who didn't take part and that expense is shared equally among the rest. For splits by exact amounts or by shares (for example a couple counting as two), use the free Group Debts app.

What if someone has already paid someone back?

Add it as an expense paid by the person who sent the money, shared only by the person who received it. The balances then account for it.

Is the result rounded?

Amounts are worked out to the cent and shared fairly: when something can't be split evenly, the leftover cent goes to one person, so the totals always match exactly.
